12' Nantucket Sleigh Solo Canoe

The Nantucket Sleigh is a 12' double paddle
canoe designed specifically for the paddler
under 225 Lbs looking for a lightweight boat
easy to transport and stable enough to fish
from. This boat should weigh about 25 lbs
when fully decked out and the design capacity
and stability. This additional buoyancy creates
a fine cut-water with a well defined entry point
which allows this boat to cut through the chop
as opposed to ride up on the waves. Because
of rivers. Though not advised for white water,
quickwater should not be an issue.

This boat was inspired by a design from Bart Hauthaway. Bart was
respected both nationally and internationally as a small boat designer,
and world class paddler. In fact, he was the coach of the Olympic Kayak
Team and teacher to countless paddlers.
Although Bart's international acclaim is indisputable, I knew him as
someone who loved all things nature. His passion for fishing Buzzards Bay,
or turkey hunting in the Berkshires was really something. Though Bart was
not one to name his boats, I am. It is for him that I named this boat the
Nantucket Sleigh. Even into his 80's, he would think nothing of getting
into this boat, going into the bay and bringing in a blue fish. Any of you
who have ever done that know the feeling of the boat being propelled by the
fleeing fish. Here, we call that the Nantucket Sleigh Ride.

Because of the sweeping curves of the stems
and the exaggerated transition from get tight
enough that you want to have an extra set of
hands to help you. Other than that the stripping
of this boat was uneventful and in fact was
stripped in our shop in about 12 hours.
Recently we had a visitor in the shop who was
also a friend of Bart's, When he saw this boat,
all he could say was Bart would be tickled pink.

If we can't interest you in a full or partial kit, and you only need the
fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin, we have put together the Epoxy kit
that I use during the building of these boats on the videos and have
made them available here for your convenience. These kits have the
hardener, the right resin for laying up glass cloth, the thickening agent
for your gluing needs as well as calibrated pumps for measuring the
hardeners and LV resin as well as the fiberglass cloth.
