Sandpiper Kayak Plans

The Sandpiper kayak plans are for one of our smaller designs.  This particlular kayak is a cross between a double paddle canoe and a kayak.  It is a bit deeper, and slightly wider than a typical kayak of its length.  

This is a great solo kayak for the fishermen and photographers who like to go gunkholing.  It is very stable, comfortable and easy to enter and exit.

The Sandpiper is an interesting little kayak. We often get special requests for boat designs and infrequently have time to assist. However, every once in a while a customer can be so dogged with an idea worthy of contemplation that we give in and make the time. These kayak plans are the result of just such a person.

Specifically the requests were for a easy to transport, light weight kayak which was deeper than a typical kayak and easy to enter and exit, that would fit in the back of a small SUV with the hatch up and the seats down. Upon reflection, this idea seemed to be something that others may want as well.  In years past (many years past), there were boats known by the name of double paddle canoes which fit the description pretty well. In effect they were small canoes that were decked fore and aft, low seats with seat backs and were propelled with double paddles (pretty much a kayak paddle but a bit longer).

All of our kayak plans come with full size patterns for all of the forms as well as full size patterns for hull and deck cradles, and of course the plans sheets.  We offer everything from full kits to individual supplies for all of our wood strip boats.  Below you will find options for what we call our "Build Your Own Kit" kit.  If you plan on milling your own wood strips, then simply choose the router bits right for your particular router with either 1/4" or 1/2" shank, along with the prepackaged fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin and application tools.
