Chuck's Companion Canoe in Texas
OK, making progress, I have learned some valuable lessons, 1st, there is really no
extreme right or wrong way to do things, just be consistent and work with what you
have, balancing along the way.
The bungees are doing really great, I have graduated to the larger thicker ones in
combination with the smaller ones and am also adding one around forms 2 and 3 to
hold them in while the glue dries, that is working good.
Check out the level at the 12 strips mark, I was excited to see that it was in the bubble
after having stripped halfway up the form. I have been matching strips on each side to
try and make sure that everything is as consistent as possible and that is a good
testament to the progress.
Have pretty much stop using the jigs and have turned them into a strip platform on the
top of the canoe. Works really well for sorting and choosing the strips. So far I have
been able to use all single piece strips (no scarfing, except for the whitewood which I
couldn’t get in a very long length) but there are only two of those on each side. The
strips seem to be going on ok.
I had hoped for most all of the strips to be fairly “Fair” as they were placed and
aligned but I guess that is part of the process once the stripping is complete and I
really should'nt worry too much about a little variation in the thicknesses etc. They are
fairly straight, or bending in a fair line across the hull with a few minor exceptions that
I'm sure will be hardly noticeable but as I'm sure you know, when you are this close to
the project and you see every little detail, the perfectionist in you comes out. In the big
picture, those things probably will not be noticeable.
Take care. Chuck
